21 Days of Prayer – The Psalms
Over the next 21 days, our hope is that you will experience the presence and power of God in your life as you spend quality time with God in prayer. We are believing for the next three weeks to be life-changing for you and for our church as we focus on scripture from the Book of Psalms for our daily devotionals.
Originally known as "The Psalter," the Book of Psalms contains 150 psalms or songs from Hebrew religious life and worship—songs dear to the people’s hearts and reflective of their personal experiences. The title "Psalms" comes from the Greek word psalmos which means "a song," and the Hebrew title for the book is tehillim, meaning "praises." The psalms were originally accompanied by instruments and were part of the oral tradition of Israel before they were collected into groupings. One could say the psalms represent an ancient songbook of God’s people. So, during your daily devotions, feel free to also sing the psalms. When you do, you will be giving praise to God, and you may experience His Word in a new way!
We also invite you to incorporate fasting into your daily time with God. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that was implemented throughout the Bible to encourage the people of God to honor and seek Him through a devoted time of prayer (Leviticus 23:27-32; Nehemiah 9:1-2; Daniel 1:8-21; Zechariah 7:3-5; Matthew 6:16-18; Luke 18:12. Before being tempted by the Devil, Jesus fasted for 40 days - Matthew 4:1-2).
Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more personal experience, so we encourage you to go to God and ask Him what it is that He would have you fast over the next 21 days and then take a break from it to spend more time with God in prayer. Some ways you can fast:
- Fast from food altogether and pray throughout the day
- Replace one meal a day with prayer
- Fast from social media and spend that time in prayer
- Fast from tv for 1 hour in the evening to pray
Whatever it is you sense you are to fast for the next 21days, we believe when you put God first above everything else, you will hear God’s voice more clearly, and your life will be transformed.
21 Days of Prayer Daily Devotional Roadmap
- Read and/or Sing the Scripture
- Meditate on it (inwardly reflect)
- Ask God to speak to you (ask God to reveal more to you and how you can apply it in your life)
Focus – The Lord’s instruction in Wisdom
Scripture – Psalm 1:1-3
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.
Father, help me to seek you every day and enjoy learning and growing in Your Word. Reveal Your love to me by the power of Your Word and help me to live my life to honor You. Help my faith to grow stronger through the power of Your Word and for the fruit of the Spirit to be revealed in my life by the power of Your Spirit. I know You have so much more in store for me to do, so reveal Your plans for me and let me prosper in all that I do for You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Hope in the Ultimate King
Scripture – Psalm 2:6-8
For the Lord declares, "I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain." The king proclaims the Lord’s decree: "The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your father. Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession."
Father God, thank You for Your Son, Your chosen Ruler and ultimate King. Jesus, You are my King and my Savior and the Lord of my life. My hope is found in You. I am so thankful that You gave Your life for me, and because of that, I give my life to You. Help me to live each day for You and to experience the Kairos or "God moments" that You have for me each day. Holy Spirit, make me aware of what You are doing in and around me today, and lead me in the plans that You have created just for me. I love you, Jesus. In Your Name, Amen.
Focus – The Power of Praise
Scripture – Psalm 8:1-6
O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength (lit. "to give You praise"), silencing your enemies and all who oppose you. When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
Father, Your majesty fills the earth and Your glory is higher than the heavens. When I praise You, the Bible says it silences my enemies. Help me to praise You every day for all You have done for me. Thank You for caring for me and for crowning me with Your glory and honor. You have given me all authority over the power of my enemy through Your Son, Jesus. I am forever grateful for what You have done for me and for the gift of Your grace and praise. Let all that is within me praise Your Holy Name! I love You, Jesus. Amen.
Focus – A Passion Psalm
Scripture – Psalm 22:25-28
I will praise you in the great assembly. I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship you. The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the Lord will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. The whole earth will acknowledge the Lord and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him. For royal power belongs to the Lord. He rules all the nations.
Father, I worship you above all else. My heart rejoices because of Your everlasting love for me. I pray for my entire family to love and to serve You and to help others know You. Help us to walk with You and fulfill Your purpose and divine plans for our lives. Lord, You are the ruler of all the nations, and the whole earth belongs to You. Knowing this, fills me with peace and comfort. Help me to trust You when doubt and worry try to control my heart and my mind. Holy Spirit, give me the boldness and the courage to tell others about the wonderful things my God has done (say them outloud). In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – The Good Shepherd
Scripture – Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
O Lord, You are my good Shepherd who loves me, protects me, provides for me and shelters me. You are with me on even the darkest day. I don’t have to be afraid because You are always with me. You help me through the most difficult circumstances, and You guide me so that I can bring honor to Your name. Your goodness and mercy follow me and because of Your unfailing love for me, You will never stop pursuing me all the days of my life. You are my good Shepherd, and I am so thankful for You. Amen.
Focus – Delight in the Lord
Scripture – Psalm 37:1-5, 23-24
Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. [v. 23-25] The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.
Father, help me give envy or worry no place in my life, but instead, help me turn every care and stress I have over to you today. Help me to trust that You have my best interest at heart, and You want to guide my every decision. Today, I make a commitment to put You first above all else: above my family and friends, above my career, above my hobbies, and above my dreams and goals. I ask You to replace my desires with Your desires. Help me to commit everything I do to You and trust You to work out all of the details and answer my concerns. Lord, direct my steps, make Your path for me clear, and guide me by Your Spirit and Your Word. It comforts me to know that You delight in every detail of my life, and when I stumble, You are there for me to help me get back up and keep walking by faith. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Better than Life
Scripture – Psalm 63:1-4
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
Father, Your love for me is better than life. Where would I be without Your unfailing love for me? There is no one like You. You are faithful to me even when I am unfaithful to You. Forgive me for the times I have been unfaithful to You or have doubted Your love for me. My soul thirsts for You, and with my whole being, I long to know You more. Nothing can satisfy me like You—not a person, not riches, or fame, or power. Nothing on this earth can compare to Your love. Because You are my helper and my refuge, I will live my life to praise You and sing of the joy of my salvation. Day and night, let my thoughts be filled with You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Tell the Next Generation
Scripture – Psalm 78:1-4
O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.
Father, thank You for Your Word that is filled with stories of Your everlasting love for us and the mighty miracles You have performed through the ages. The good news is You still do! Thank You for the miracles You have done and still do for me, and the greatest miracle of all is the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus. This Psalm says we all have a responsibility to tell the next generation about Your love and faithfulness, so help us do this as individuals, as parents, and as a church community. Lord, thank You for the opportunity to get to share the Good News with the next generation every week! In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
(If you have children, call them by name) Father, _____ belongs to You. I am praying and believing that _____ will know You and help others know You, and _____ will fulfill the purpose and calling that You have for her/him. Help _____ to experience Your love and Your power by Your Spirit in a greater way this year in Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – My Place of Safety
Scripture – Psalm 91:1-4
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
Father, You are my place of safety, where I experience rest and refuge from all the chaos in this life. Help me escape to Your presence every day where I can find peace and protection. When I am hidden in You, nothing can get to me. Nothing can touch me in the shelter of the Almighty. Your faithful promises guard and keep me from the persistent attacks of my enemies. You alone are the ultimate place of safety. I am so thankful that I am more than a conqueror through You, Jesus! In Your Name, Amen.
Focus – When We Call, God Answers
Scripture – Psalm 91:9-16
If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me, I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation."
Father, thank you for hearing me when I call out to You and for answering me. I’m so thankful for Your Word and for Your promises that say no evil will conquer me when I put my trust in You. No disease can come near me or stay in my home in the mighty name of Jesus. Father God, charge Your angels to surround me and protect me (and my family) where ever I go and let no harm come near me. Your blessings overwhelm me, and Your salvation has set me free through Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Planted in the Lord’s House
Scripture – Psalm 92:12-15
But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, "The Lord is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him!"
Lord, help my faith to grow stronger as I stay rooted and planted in the house of God and be a blessing to my church community as I serve You and help others find and follow You. Father, thank You for my church and my church family, and pour out Your blessings of provision, protection, and peace upon them. Lead and anoint our pastors and spiritual leaders by Your Spirit as they seek You, reveal Your heart to them and help them walk in Your Word and Your ways. As they lay down their lives to help others find and follow You, protect them and bless them and their families in special and amazing ways. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Shout with Joy to the Lord!
Scripture – Psalm 100
Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.
Lord, You are God, and we are the sheep of Your pasture. We belong to You! You have put a new song in my heart – a song of praise and thanksgiving, a song of hope, a song of joy! I sing praises to You for the great things You have done and do every day. You are not a God who is far away, but You are up close and personal. You desire an intimate relationship with me and with each of us, so interrupt my day with "Kairos moments," or God-opportunities, to spend time with You and share with others about the Good News of Jesus. Lord, I belong to You so lead me by Your Spirit today and every day. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Never Forget
Scripture – Psalm 103:1-5
Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!
Lord, let all that I am praise Your name! Every day, all day, fill my mouth with Your Word and Your praise. You have been so good to me. You fill my life with good things and Good News. You forgive me of all of my sins, and You heal me of all diseases. You sent Your Word to heal me. You are my Healer, the Great Physician. Thank You for doctors and nurses and for medical care, but help me remember that, ultimately, You are my Healer. Help me to make wise choices to take care of my health and my body. Strengthen me and renew my youth like the eagle’s. I love You, Father, Amen.
Focus – A Life of Wisdom & Generosity
Scripture – Psalm 112:4-9
Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly. Such people will not be overcome by evil. Those who are righteous will be long remembered. They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly. They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor.
Lord, let Your light shine bright in me and through me! Help me to live a lifestyle of honoring and revering You at home and at work. I want others to see Jesus in me. I walk in the light, and I don’t have to be afraid of what the enemy will try to do to me because You are with me. Through Jesus Christ, You have given me authority over all the power of my spiritual enemies. God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-discipline. Lord, everything I have belongs to You, so help me put You first in my finances and be willing to share with others in need. I ask You to open doors for me everywhere I go, so that I can make an eternal impact with my life and influence others for You in all that I do and all that I am. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Hide His Word in Your Heart
Scripture – Psalm 119:11-18
I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. I praise you, O Lord; teach me your decrees. I have recited aloud all the regulations you have given us. I have rejoiced in your laws as much as in riches. I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways. I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word. Be good to your servant, that I may live and obey your word. Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.
Lord, thank You for the power of Your Word my life! When I read Your Word, I better understand who You are and Your plan for my life. When I learn Your Word and hide it in my heart, I am reminded of how powerful You are in me. Who can stand against me, when You are on my side? Let Your Word guide me and transform me. Father, not my will be done, but Your will be done in me. As I read and study Your Word, open my eyes by Your Spirit to see new and wonderful truths I have never known before. Help me to walk in these truths and live my life to honor and bring glory to You by the power of Your Word in Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – A Light for My Path
Scripture – Psalm 119:101-105
I have refused to walk on any evil path, so that I may remain obedient to your word. I haven’t turned away from your regulations, for you have taught me well. How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey. Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life. Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
Father, Your Word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. You speak to my heart from Your Word, and through it, you light the path I should take in life that brings honor to You and strengthens my faith. Your Word is filled with real life examples that fill me with hope and inspire me to fulfill Your purpose for me. By the power of Your Word, enlighten my mind and help me understand what Your will and plan is for my life, then by Your Spirit, guide me every day. Not my will be done, but Your will be done in me. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Life in Harmony
Scripture – Psalm 133
It is good and pleasant when God’s people live together in peace! It is like perfumed oil poured on the priest’s head and running down his beard. It ran down Aaron’s beard and on to the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Mount Hermon falling on the hills of Jerusalem. There the Lord gives his blessing of life forever.
Lord Jesus, when Your people walk in unity and harmony it brings glory and honor to You. You have anointed us to walk together in peace and to love each other as You love us. Your blessings overflow in our lives when we bind ourselves together by the power of Your Spirit and stand together against our enemies’ desire to divide us. Father, help us to be on-guard against strife and division as we walk together in peace and harmony. Your love is patient and kind, so help me be patient and kind with others today and every day. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – You Know Everything About Me
Scripture – Psalm 139:1-5
O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Father God, You know everything about me because You created me. You are with me everywhere I go. I cannot escape Your presence because Your Spirit lives in me. You know my thoughts, and You hear my words. You are with me when I’m with people and when I’m behind closed doors. You know me better than I know myself. Your thoughts and plans for me are good, not for disaster, because You give me a future and a hope. Your hand of blessing is upon my head. I’m so thankful for Your presence – before me, behind me, and all around me. You are with me everywhere I go. In Your Name, Amen.
Focus – You Made Me on Purpose
Scripture – Psalm 139:13-18
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!
Father, You had a plan for my life before I was born. Every day of my life has been recorded in Your Book. You made me on purpose with a purpose—to know You and to make You known. Your thoughts for me outnumber the grains of sand! I am overwhelmed by Your love for me. Nothing can ever separate me from Your love—no fear, no enemy, or worry will ever separate me from Your love that is revealed in Christ Jesus. I’m so thankful that You are always with me! Holy Spirit, help me fulfill my eternal purpose for which I have been created. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Let’s Dance!
Scripture – Psalm 149:1-5
Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful. O Israel, rejoice in your Maker. O people of Jerusalem, exult in your King. Praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine and harp. For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. Let the faithful rejoice that he honors them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds.
Lord, what an honor it is to praise You for all You have done for me. I will sing a new song to You with all of my heart and dance for joy to the music of my God. You, alone, are worthy of my praises. You have honored us by giving us victory through Christ Jesus and salvation through His name. Thank You, for giving me everything You have so that I could be free in Christ Jesus. I love You, Father. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Focus – Praise the Lord!
Scripture – Psalm 150
Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven! Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequaled greatness! Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp! Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!
We praise You, mighty God and King, for no one compares to You! Through psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, I will worship You. You are unrivaled in Your mighty power, and Your love for me is as high as the heavens are above the earth. I will praise You for You have removed my sins from me as far as the east is from the west. There is no one like You, mighty God, not in heaven or on earth. Everything good in my life comes from You. Help me live my life to bring honor to You and help others know You, and let all that is within me Praise Your Mighty Name, Amen.
